Been so busy this fall trying to get some yard work done (ugh!) and just relaxing. Made some delish beef stew last week on the first really fall weekend of the year. Sooooo delish. Just last night made some black bean soup. I started with dried black beans and they were taking too long to cook and all I wanted to do was go to sleep. So I threw the whole pot into the crock pot and let it cook while I slept. The house smelled so good all night.
Hopefully there will be more regular posts.

I didn't make the salmon
Made grilled cheese instead because I got lazy. Hey it happens. In the meantime it is a gorgeous day here in Baltimore. Probably time to deal with some weeds. :-( Football season is starting soon which is good because that means the office pool is starting as well. My husband and I need a team name. Any suggestions?

Fridays
Work has been totally insane so I have not had any energy to update the blog. I am really glad that I finally have a weekend at home too. Last weekend I went the Musikfest in Bethlehem, PA. Due to a rather relaxed schedule, my friends and I only caught one band, the Red Elvises. I highly recommend them if you are in the mood for something totally silly, yet entertaining. They are very engaging. I don't really know how else to describe them. Making some salmon tonight. Something easy for a Friday night. I haven't really baked too much except a pound cake and a peach cobbler. Have a great weekend! (I don't know who that is addressed to, cuz no one reads this!)

Summertime
Tonight I stopped at the grocery store and picked up a few green tomatoes to fry and make fried green tomato blts. I got the idea last week when I was in Asheville, NC at Early Girl Eatery. They had such a blt on the specials board. I chose the grilled pimento cheese sandwich instead.
I had some issues trying to get the clerk at the grocery store understand that the bag had green tomatoes in it and not granny smith apples. Actually every time he held up the bag to get some help some other employee kept saying, "Oh Granny Smith apples!".
The thing is as I cooked my tomatoes and bacon I was thinking that Summer is a wonderful season because there are certain things that are only available in summer. No matter how far produce is shipped in from whatever temperate climate, tomatoes taste awful in December and like heaven in August. There is this brief period each year where markets just burst with juicy, sweet local tomatoes (an even shorter period for green tomatoes). The summer corn, peaches, melons and berries are just perfection. It is almost reassuring that in this time where just about anything can be found on the internet that there are still things we need to wait for...
...like a perfect tomato.

Biscuits
Well I really and truly love to make biscuits. There is something so wonderful about mixing the dough together and turning it out to knead it just a few times. They don't require any high end cookery. They can be made with little equipment and for next to nothing. They are easy to make too. For years now I have been cutting out my biscuits with glasses. Shot glasses if I wanted them small. I maintain that expensive gadgets and high end cookware won't make your food taste better (although admittedly sometimes it makes your life a little easier).
